PopSci.com Redesigned for Community and User Engagement
New York, NY (February 4, 2008)— Popular Science’s Web site PopSci.com, originally launched in 1994, has undergone a major overhaul with a redesign in Drupal, the award-winning open-source content management system. In developing the new PopSci.com, the editorial team contracted the Web development shop pingVision, which understood that audience engagement, user-interactivity and the tools to foster a robust community were essential for its success. Drupal was built with community features at its core; the platform allows PopSci.com users to easily participate in the site by logging in to leave comments, have discussions with one another and with the magazine’s editors, submit photos and videos, and generate custom RSS feeds.
The approach to the redesign will not only appeal to the current PopSci.com community, the site serves as an accessible window for users seeking information on daily events shaping our world from a science and technology standpoint.
“We’re seeing an increasing importance of science and technology in our daily life,” said Gregg Hano, Publisher of Popular Science. “PopSci.com is the ultimate resource for users who want to engage, share, and learn about the future of health, the environment, gear and gadgets, space and aviation, and auto tech.”
In addition, pingVision developed multiple custom Drupal “modules” to deliver new and improved functionality that the open-source platform didn’t previously feature. At the project’s completion, many of these custom modules and improvements will be contributed back into the Drupal community, where they can be used freely by anyone.
“Being able to give back to the Drupal community with this code is essential to PopSci.com being on the front lines of science and technology,” said Mark Jannot, Editor-in-Chief of Popular Science. “We’re not only reporting on what’s new and what’s next, we’re creating it.”
Another key enhancement with PopSci.com will be the organization of our content via “tags” assigned to each article, photo gallery, image or video on the site. This will allow for smart related-content associations, ease-of-navigation and keyword-based ad targeting.
PopSci.com has seen year over year growth for a number of years. Most recently, Page Views were up 38% full year 2007 vs. 2006. In the same period, Unique Users saw a 10% boost and Page Views per Unique users saw a 26% increase.
