A website is more than simply a design or layout: it’s a user experience. The website visitor comes to the site with a host of habits and expectations; the effective website delivers an experience that empowers the visitor, enabling the searcher to find what he came to find, enabling the doer to do what she came to do.

The organization – the structure – providing these experiences is the information architecture. What organizes that architecture, that functionality, and presents it in a way that makes sense to the user, is the graphic user interface, or “GUI.”

Our design methodology is based upon the tenet that the graphic design drives the architecture and the architecture drives the graphic design — and out of this process the graphic user interface takes shape. As such, the web development process is not easily quantified. The process is iterative, with each decision in one area affecting the choices made in other areas, which choices in turn affect the others, and so on.

During this process we move through a series of stages in the design and development process: a visitors-vs.-content flow chart; a list of functionality requirements; identification of user roles; sketches of user personas; listing of use cases; definition of content types and taxonomy; layout wireframes; design composites. We work closely with our clients to ensure that the site realizes their goals and embodies the desired look and feel, while being easy and enjoyable to use by the website's intended audience and unexpected visitors alike.

As a result, we encourage and expect active and close interaction with our clients, with rapid turnaround on design iterations, client feedback and subsequent adjustments. This is especially important when it comes to meeting target milestones, and essential for projects with tight timetables.

Once this initial design/architecture phase is completed, we define an initial technical architecture, and then, in an iterative process, implement the software configuration, custom code development, data migrations and imports, third-party integrations, theme template construction and CSS styling, staging, testing and quality assurance, and deployment.
