Check it out, along with the rest of BlogHer!

I am the last one to claim credit for what really is the success of the BlogHers and other members on the site. This is their triumph. This is one site chock full of incredible women. Just check out the online mentions of BlogHer and see who's being talked about. I truly wonder if any site anywhere has ever pulled together such a critical mass of blogging talent on one domain.

It's all about the community, the content, the conversations. And all are A+ on this site.

Still, I confess I certain glowing feeling seeing a site I personally spent so much time building doing well. Now we only have to iron out some bugs and add a few more features, and the site will officially launch and hopefully deserve the high praise and expectations.

The Gender Gap in Blogging

One of the questions Ponzi asked me during a webcast interview was, "Why is there a need for a separate conference for women bloggers?"

I am not sure of the reasons - I have some hunches - but the preliminary data suggests for whatever reasons, a gap exists.

As a co-moderator for the on-line portion of the Blogher Conference, I met Ponzi on line. She subsequently interviewed me for the Chris Pirillo Show and I got even more tied onto the ongoing conversations around blogging and where world of the internet is going.

I was not familiar with IT Conversations until the Blogher Conference of 2005 when my business partner, and Drupal maven, Laura Scott, sent me some links to it.

IT Conversations News is an excellent source of information. They have a great pulse on the internet. That's because conversations are outstripping books and even magazines as the best souces of timely information. IT Conversations is a treasure trove of conversations that make excellent listening during drive-time or other times when we are starved for content and want to put our time to maximum use.

It was through IT Conversations that the following information was called to may attention, forwarded to me by Doug Kay who writes, in part

I've just created a new survey for IT Conversations listeners. It would be a huge help to us if you would spend five minutes and take the survey. Not only will it help us attract underwriters and sponsors (and therefore keep the content free), but it will also help us set the direction for new programs.

Some very interesting early results from the survey:

* 92% of you are male

* 40% of you have a Master's degree or higher (that surprised me)

* 76% have at least a four-year degree

* 47% of you are outside the U.S.

The results are well beyond the statistically significant threshold.

What surprised me was not the educational level. And I did suspect men would be the majority - but 92%?

Certainly the subscribers to IT Conversations do not correlate one-to-one with the all the blogging world, but it does show that women may well not be accessing valuable resources available to them.

One of the questions Ponzi asked me during a webcast interview was, "Why is there a need for a separate conference for women bloggers?"

I am not sure of the reasons - I have some hunches - but the preliminary data suggests for whatever reasons, a gap exists. To test this, I looked a bit further. An article in ClickZ appeared last May.

The number of people, irrespective of gender, who have "created a blog" is nine percent. Younger people (18-29) are more likely to have created a blog than people older. Males more than females.

Hopefully the internet will turn out to be its own answer.

Those already on the internet now have to help others get on board. Becoming a blogger is relatively easy for someone already on the internet. The big problem is how to reach people who are not on the internet, which might well be through traditional channels.

Subheadline:

Worldwide annex to July 30th event

Summary:

July 28, 2005 -- pingVision (www.pingV.com) and the BlogHer Conference '05 (www.BlogHer.org) announced yesterday that pingVision will host an online chatroom dedicated to the women's event.

The 11th-hour partnership will provide a real-time global annex to the BlogHer Conference taking place on Saturday, July 30th in Santa Clara, CA.

Detail:

"We wanted to do what we could to support what seems like a very worthwhile event," pingVision president Laura Scott said. "Start-ups of any kind are never easy. If we can help make it possible for more people to participate, it's worth it."
On the BlogHer website, organizer Lisa Stone said, "When I saw with a shock the size of BlogHer's waitlist and continued to hear of global interest in these sessions, I asked Laura's advice on chat. Predictably, she's making it happen."
"We're setting it up as a web-based chat," said Scott. "If we limited participation to people who felt comfortable playing with IRC, I'm afraid it would just be us geekettes, and BlogHer is about all women."
Stone concurred. "We considered going prehistoric uber-geek with IRC, but were worried about (a) trolls and (b) how to help a range of users from geek to newbie find the right client, especially folks on MACs."
In a blog post on their website, Scott expressed hope for success. "This is all very last-minute, and we're doing our little part on faith that if we build it they will come. It's our hope that many women (and men) interested in how the internets are changing how women (and men) do business, get active, interact and so on will stop by the official chatroom and get in on the discussion."

Visitors with internet access can visit the BlogHer chatroom at www.pingV.com on Saturday, July 30th, from 7am to 7pm PDT (2pm to 2am GMT).

BlogHer is a network for women bloggers to draw on for exposure, education, and community. By holding a day-long conference on July 30, 2005, and establishing an online hub, BlogHer is initiating an opportunity for greater visibility, learning and success for individual women bloggers and for the community of bloggers as a whole. Details are available at www.BlogHer.org.

pingVision is a woman-owned interactive media firm primarily focused on dynamic web development and DVD authoring services. More information can be found at www.pingV.com.
